8th Grade Students at Unidos explored the tradition of Oaxaca-Mexacan folk art Alebrije sculptures. The sculptures are traditionally wood carvings of fantastical animals and are carefully painted with intricate designs. Students used found materials such as aluminum foil, crumpled paper, and cardboard to form the base of their animals and used papier-mâché to cover the animals and finally acrylic paint the animals. Product: Students design, plan, and create a 4 layer paper appliqué collage or Paper Mola. Process: Students are introduced to the Mola as work of art and discussed vocabulary. Students are guided through the process of creating a template, planning out layers and colors, and exact-o-knife safety. Content: The Mola is one of the tradional art forms of the Kuna people of central and South America. A form of fabric appliqué skilled artisans master. ESF Haverford, 2013As the Senior Camp Arts Specialist I led campers and group counselors through an enriching arts program. Activities were intended to foster creativity and skill development by exploring techniques in drawing, painting, design, ceramics, set design, and mixed-media. Projects included a Keith Haring Dance Off, Cubist Super Hero Painting, Kaleidoscope Name Designs, Tye-Dye, Ceramic Bird House, and Zen-tangles.
